Stove venting

Kind of an odd question: I have the same exact BIS fireplace. I'm curious where the vent grates were relocated to?? In the before pic, they are up above and painted white to match the wall. Trying to find a way of reworking mine.
End result looks great by the way.

The ledger stone was applied around the venting grates leaving them open. Then we added a build up and attached cement board to the face of the existing grates leaving a 1" gap for air to pass around the 24"x36" area, then attached the existing ledger stone to the cement board. This face allows for air to pass while blending in nicely.

Aesthetically it is beautiful and you would never know the grates are there. In hind sight if I had to do it over again, I would have allowed a little more than the 1" for the air to flow. It works well, but with that one tweak it would be even better. Good luck on your project!
