Refacing fireplace in room with painted knotty pine walls

We have a floor to ceiling and wall to wall brick fireplace with hearth (circa 1960s). We want to reface it to lighten up the basement space, but do not want to paint the brick. We already painted the surrounding walls a light tan and the trim white. We were thinking of facing the brick with horizontal boards and whitewashing them. Would the horizontal lines on the fireplace wall conflict with vertical knotty pine walls? We are open to suggestions as long as it isn't to paint the brick. :-)

If this is a wood burning fireplace you will not be able to run wood right up to firebox so think about how to leave the brick exposed in thet are aIMO if you have wood pannelling wood would be my last choice I find knotty pine very darkening in a room and for resale that is what I would get rid of and leave the brick

If you are going to put more wood panelling in that room, I think it would look odd if it were different from the existing panelling.

I'm wondering, why don't you want to paint the brick? Because that really is the easiest solution and you can always panel over it after if you don't like it.

I like the brick better than my mental visual of knotty pine, which is IMO a flash in the pan 1970s revival trend. Brick is timeless re resale.

To tie the brick in to the rest of the room, install a mantle with a similar look to your wooden ceiling joist. The mantle should be the full width of the wall.

To go with the wood mantle idea...how about adding some faux stone around the fireplace (and up to the ceiling). This would look much better if you went with the "knotty pine" - a nice, warm and rustic pairing.

The knotty pine in the room was painted tan (see the painted walls in the picture). We are trying to step away from that darkening look, which is why we want to lighten up the brick as well. We intend to do some sort of rustic mantel like Jennifer K suggested, but want to do something to the brick.

Consider resurfacing with large tiles over the brick. Reasonable cost and a little light reflective.

Please do not cover the brick. It makes the room look so cozy. It only needs a mantle and some art.

If you are really against painting the brick...I'm not sure why as this is a GOOD option, then clad the wall with pine like the rest of the room. I presume you will keep the brick hearth or would you reclad it with some other material?

We will keep the brick hearth, but I would love to top it with a slate in contrast to the lighter wall (whatever we end up doing: painted panel, whitewash, tile, etc. and hang a rustic wood mantel). We want to keep the cost low, possibly a DIY project as this is our basement and the main hangout space for our kids, but I want to bring the look into this century.
