That answer is called "covering your ass". No respectable kitchen designer would create or allow such a situation to be created. Someone along the way (designer, HD) should have caught the inherent incompatibility in the materials selected, and presented functional options. This is why I do not recommend big box stores for major projects like a kitchen. It is worth paying a specialist more money up front to do the job right, then live for years with regret.
