Pepper tree desperation!!!!

When my husband and i moved into our new place, there was this big established pepper tree, mostly dead, in the dirt mound that passed for the backyard. The neighbor kids had hammed boards into it to try and make a tree house, then abandoned it to rot and wither away. After over 2 years of careful fertilization, trimming, and watering, im proud to say our tree is coming back, its producing tons of shady branches and leaves, nd this year was even producing the red peppercorns. However, there is significant rot in one of its 2 trunks, and virtually no bark on all but the north facing side. Its clearly very much alive, but we want it to grow more uniformly, and prevent the rot from spreading. We have noticed mean looking big black beatles burrowing into it, no termites (thank the lord!) its not a small tree, and keeps most of one side of my house shady during these horrificly hot southern californa summers. Any ideas on how we can get rid of the beatles, and promote trunk strength and bark growth?
