New Baby Quilt

A couple of weeks ago I said I needed to get a quilt done for my niece's new baby due in April. I finally got the gears to turning and put together a crib size pinwheel quilt with a Twinkle twinkle little star border and a lamb faced backing.

I'm pretty wishy washy when starting a new project because I have so many different ideas - it's hard to pin me down to just one. But once I narrow it down - I'm pretty focused on what I want things to be in the end. That was until I came to the backing. I knew I wanted the lamb backing - but alas - I didn't have enough for the enlarged front I had created. Sooooo - I pieced it by using the same basic design idea of the pinwheel triangle to elongate the fabric on hand. It brought the gray to the back as carry through from the front - and it fit. A polka dot binding tied in the yellow from front to back. I'm sending it off in the mail in the morning to the new arrival for an upcoming baby shower.

Love it! The gray and yellow play so nicely together and putting the gray on the back was an awesome idea. I love how problem solving leads to design options.

Baby quilts are no longer pink and blue pastels. This one is lovely.

You are all so kind. I was in a quandary about this one. The parents don't know the gender so it had to be pretty neutral, not too girly, not too boyish. Mind you I have 7 grandsons and lots of little boy fabrics so I tend to see blues, cars, and blocks around my house. But my niece painted the nursery a light gray and things began to fall together. With a Missouri Quilt tutorial on easy pinwheels - it was a no brainer. This is only my 3rd actual pieced quilt and I think I'm getting the hang of it. Taking some classes in the very near future is on the to do list. So much to learn to be really efficient and be able to create some real beauties. On to the March blocks!

ibqultn4fun, thanks for the comment on Missouri Quilt tutorial. As a new quilter, I'd never heard of them. I looked it up and actually watched a few of them last night. You're right, that's a quick way to make pinwheels. I'm definitely putting it on my list to try! Thanks again.

Adorable quilt! Your color selection is perfect.

I'm in the middle of making a baby quilt as well and know it's a girl, so very pink. The funny part is the Mom is real girly-girl on the outside, but drives in junk car derby's ! I got the cutest pink trucks for backing...can't wait to finish this one.
