If you are on a tight budget, i would consider painting them (white) and add some nice 6" bar pulls...it will make a world of difference! Lightly sand and rough them up first, prime coat and then paint. If white is too boring, go to your local Home Improvement store for ideas and try and copy the 'look'. Good Luck!

I would do a large decorative crown moulding at the top of the cabinets. And also you can have them refinished for a lot less then new cabinets. Or paint them yourself. I would add larger items on the top of the cabinets for decorations. I can't tell if you have a backsplash or not but you could look into a more rustic stone backsplash and leave your cabinets. Just add the crown moulding at the top. Here is an example. This would change the look of the cabinets to.

paint the uppers white and the lowers and back of penninsula a nice green. install a complimenting backsplash. put something over the fridge for balance. Here are some pics
