ART: ART FOR ART'S SAKE OR DECOR?

last modified: 9 years ago

Do you buy art just because you love it, doesn't matter if the frames or the art itself matches or, is it just part and parcel of your decor?

for love
part of my decor

I buy it for love.We have wildlife (mainly waterfowl) western & native american, both southwest and northwest. This includes prints, posters, artist proof, pottery, decoys and kachinas. I would love to own, one day, a Hopi Warrior Mouse. They all belong together, to me, because of how I feel about each piece and the story behind it.

Everything that is on my walls, including family photographs and art painted by 3 relatives, are things that I love!

One's art goes as far and as deep as one's love goes. Art is not only a decor but a life for a wall for a room ....A feel !

Bev, your house sounds like mine! Most of the art on walls is by my daughter or mother, though I d have a few pieces I've picked up at galleries or shows that I love.
I have unified the look by unifying the frames to some degree, eg I have a number of black and white sketches in my LR and all are framed in black.
But I could never buy art just to fill a space... Unfortunately this means sometimes I have blank walls, but so be it.

From working with my design clients and the clients who commission art from me as an artist, the "pull the trigger" reaction comes from a visceral connection with a piece that speaks to them. They may have started looking because they needed a piece for a particular spot but after that it's to do with falling in love with the art.

    It's both.

I think in an ideal world you have both. If the art you buy doesn't bring you joy or make you think it isn't worth owning it. I would never recommend buying anything because it matches your pillows.

    Hi tooky58,

We believe that a well appointed home has both. Original art can have emotional meaning or investment value, but inexpensive quality pieces, such as museum-quality gallery-wrapped canvases can add another dimension while being very affordable. This is particularly helpful in rooms or spaces where there is less emphasis such as a hallway, bathroom or guestroom. But, canvas art is suitable for prominent placement as well. For example:

Cheers and good luck on your project!

I've seen it both ways. Those have a love of art as well just to fill a spot. And 100% of the time when I sell my art they get their own frames and not from site. Frames helps the mood of the piece or invest in floating frame.

Whatever feels right for the space. We have typographic posters like these in our hallway to remind us to do something (based on William Morris's quote 'have nothing in your home you don't believe to be useful or beautiful...or something like that) https://studiolaree.com/collection/hallway-posters/

We like modern art, abstract or meaningful images.

Both. When it works for both, it's kismet.
