New border beds

Hello! I found this site yesterday and saw all the wonderful ideas that were being shared. I'm hoping someone can offer some for me. We purchased this home two years ago and there was the standard boxwood here down the entire front of the home. I recently ripped it out because I want a softer, more flowing look. I like a mixture of evergreen and blooming plants, so there is something year round. We are zone 8a and face south. There is a huge oak tree on the right side of the walk and another slightly smaller one on the left. We are on a corner lot. I was looking at Sunshine Ligustrum, Soft Caress Mahonia, Dwarf Wax Myrtle, Texas Mountain Laurel and a Crown Jewel Gardenia. I want short under the windows, with something taller in between. Thoughts? My husband is no help. He tells me to pick the plant, mark the spot and he will did the hole! Lol, at least he is willing to do the labor part. :)
