Who likes variegated Rhapis palms?

I thought I would show everyone something you don't see every day. Variegated Rhapis excelsa. I love variegated plants in general, but these are some of my favorites. Right now, I have 23 of these.

Hi Plantsman56, back in the 1990s i managed to talk my mother out of a prize, a variegated rhapsis palm. Mom’s health was starting to decline, and the precious plant with perhaps 4 stems was neglected. It’s been touch and go ever since. Today, it looks as good as it ever has, but i confess i dont know what im doing. Would you mind sharing some tips? Part of the problem is likely the fact that we live in South Dakota. The house is quite cool in the winter, and dry, but i try to keep the humidity at around 40%. the little palm gets several hours of bright mosly indirect sunlight from a large south facing picture window. it is surrounded by indoor jungle of tropicals which help with the microclimate’s humidity levels. I’m a tropical girl from Texas, an old one!, living in a midcontenental harsh climate. I’m currently preparing and moving my old friends back into the house, for the next 8 - 9 months. They summer under shade cloth on a north facing patio. All look great right now. Any tips on my slow, slow growing rhapsis would be appreciated! Thanks!

Oh sorry.Just saw who posted.Mine is still small.Got from mb.You ever deal with those guys?I think their prices are fair.I have to come to your place one day.It would be nice to meet u.+ I would be like a kid in a candy store.

First, I have loved these even before I had a nursery, but o grew them like Lynn McKameys book said to grow them, and I killed most if the ones I had. Once I figured out the real easy to make them flourish, I started collecting them again. I have so many because I want to be able to split up, maybe 5 each year and make them available to others. MB, yes I know them. I'll be nice and not say much, but they sold me a single leaf palm seedling at a trade show a few years ago for $50, and I found out later, it came from an old friend of mine and he charged $7 for it. Obviously, I went out and bought 50 more from my friend once I knew where they came from.

Yes, the old supply and demand. I had never seen anyone with that palm before, and I usually have seen most palms people have, so to me, a plant I have never seen before is worth $50, and I was happy for another year until I found out where he got it. You used to see that a lot more before the internet. It used to be who you knew and in many cases, and money couldn't buy everything, so you had to have good trade material to get what you wanted. There were quite a few people who would take great monetary advantage of the people who didn't know the right people. I remember one time, a well known palm and cycad person in California sold a small cycad for $525 that I had for sale for $125, but this people didn't know me. You don't see that as much when just about everyone has a website now.

These are dwarf cultivars that have Japanese names for form and color. There are green ones and variegated ones. These are called Zuikonishiki. I also have a mostly yellow one called Zuiko- Lutino. Here is a gallery from a nursery in Australia that sells these. Talking about being in a candy store!

Lynn used to sell a single stemmed Zuikonishiki that was about 8 inches tall for $75 and $125 for a one foot stem that may have another new offset coming out. I have not found any nursery in the US that has the variety she used to have, but the basic Zuikonishiki has gone down in price from there. A single stemmed plant is still going to cost about $35+, so with shipping, the best you are going to find is about $50. I'm not sure if you call that affordable or not?
