I wish I would have reconfigured the cabinets in one area to relocate my refrigerator. So, take a look at how your appliances are working out for you.

Decide if you are going with a backsplash. I did not and had the 4" granite backsplash installed. A couple years later I decided to add a backsplash and did not want to remove the granite one, so I was limited, and went with a basic white subway tile. That turned out to be the best decision I made!

Most important thing is to get the layout right for the best functionality. Invest in good cabinets (don't have to be top of line) with lots of drawers. Don't skimp on hinges and drawer glides (Blumotion full extension soft close glides are great).

Make some fundamental finish choices that are complementary neutrals. For example, a wood look floor provides warmth to white cabinets. Stained wood look cabinets work well with a stone look floor. These combinations (white or light to medium brown cabinets; paired with an appropriate medium brown wood look or neutral stone look floor) give you great flexibility for countertop, backsplashes and walls. A busy countertop needs a simple backsplash and vice versa. The total color palette is more important than any single color.

Use butt doors instead of cabinets with center stiles. Full overlay provides a cleaner look than standard overlay.

Don't skimp on the cabinet installation. A quality install can make good cabinets look much better; a bad install can make expensive cabinets look cheap.

Drawers, drawers, and more drawers! They are so much more useful than traditional cabinets on the lowers.

Theres a pecking order to your decisions. Staying in the pecking order will spare you many mistakes and much sorrow..

Budget, Overall desired flavor and style......create an idea book, browse.....etc.

Layout and appliance selection. Plan, plan, plan, get help.

Cabinetry style /material/color/ Flooring and material and color TOGETHER.

Sink, faucet( unless oversized or farm style....which means it needs to be considered WITH cabinetry plan and layout)

Lighting placement/electrical and type, surface mount styling can be later

Counter top selection, reserve your slab if marble or granite well in advance...,order manmade slabs if not stocked, well in advance of cabinet install.

Cabinet hardware

Back splash tile UNLESS you are running counter top up the splash....which means a decision before all electrical is placed

Ensure all appliances, sink, faucet are ordered far enough in advance of cabinet arrival, do NOT demo a kitchen until cabinets are WELL on order. Kitchen remodel is only fun, when it is done. Being decisive and organized will spare you weeks of delay. And tiling a backsplash weeks later is not a "delay". .....

I thought I wanted a lot of cupboards, but now I wish I had more counter space instead of floor to ceiling cupboards on one wall.
