Asparagus Fern, keep or not? In my experience you will have no choice, you will keep it, whether you want it or not.

Thanks for the help! I'm currently at war with the Asparagus Fern; I broke a shovel yesterday and am determined to go back at it today. I should keep #4 though? Is the ginger edible?

I've successfully eradicated asparagus ferns from landscapes, kentc, but I cannot say it was fun!

The ginger is ornamental, not the cooking type. I have no idea if the ornamentals are edible--I never really look at anything other than my food garden plants and selected herbs for eating. There are a number of people in the forums that like to id and eat their weeds and ornamentals, and they would be more comfortable answering that question.

The reason that the name of #4 escapes me is that it does not grow well in our hot SoCal climate, so it has never been grown in my gardens. I don't recall any negatives for it off hand, and if I could remember the name, I could look it up. lol

Be careful with the asparagus fern -- I've gotten nearly all of it out of my back yard, but not without cost. I have a serious and uncomfortable rash reaction to it. (Hint. Wear long sleeves and gloves... When you pull up the runner roots underground, make sure you get all of the little coctail onion sized tubers!)

Could #4 be a Heuchera? Looks like it's buried too deep.

I don't think #4 is Heuchera. I think it looks like a Ligularia.

Aspargus fern is awful to get rid of like many have mentioned. Roundup doesn't work.

I think #2 is an annual grass, poa I think. I consider it weedy; you can just mow it or pull it out, don't know how easy it is to completely eradicate (especially depending on neighboring yards...)
