I'm assuming that you are asking about Asian yardlong beans? Really easy to grow in most of SoCal, unless you are in the cool coastal zone - they like heat, and languish in cool conditions. Provided that the soil is warm, germination can be in as little as 4-7 days. When I lived in San Diego, I would wait until after the "June gloom" before I planted them. The vines are strong climbers (although you might need to train them initially) so give them tall support, I would recommend a 6' trellis. They are not perennial.

However, I have seen winged bean occasionally referred to as "asparagus bean". It too is a vigorous climber, and a heat lover. Beautiful blue flowers, and unusual four-sided pods. Many of the winged bean cultivars in circulation (especially from tropical sources) are daylength sensitive, and will only bloom in short days... but that is not a problem in SoCal. Winged bean is perennial in areas where the ground does not freeze, and will eventually form a tuber. Flowers, pods, tubers, and young leaves are all edible.

Winged bean seeds are nearly spherical, while yardlong beans are elongated kidney-bean shape.
