We're the ugly house on the block

My husband and I just moved into a 1920's American foursquare. The front of the house, or nicer looking part of the house faces an alleyway. The side of the house that faces the street is quite drab. It used to be an open porch but has been closed in to make a sunroom (there are a couple of heaters on the wall under each window).
We'd like to still be able to use the room year round but would like to possible add some sliding/French doors and maybe some more Windows.
We don't really have a backyard so we plan to fence (can't be higher than 4ft) in the front and possibly make some sort of small entertaining area while still keeping some grass. It is a very small space to work with but we want to make the most of it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the exterior of the house and the front yard look better? On a budget? Haha! Maybe some shutters? I would love to paint the brick, (I know I'm in the minority there) but that would be too costly. Thanks for any advice!
