If you just hang black shelves on the wall, it will detract from the beauty of your lower cabinet.

If you must hang DYI shelves, try and match your wood to the cabinet below as much as possible.

Even if this is to be a DIY project, you could have interesting shelving.

Not sure how much weight the hidden supports will hold; however, you could create your own double shelving boxes easily enough with shelving boards and the screws used to affix them to the studs in your wall would be hidden within the box by what you put on the lower shelf.

The big box building supply stores would cut your boards to the desired length for a modest fee if you don't have a saw. Explain what you want the cut boards to do so you the vertical side pieces are a size that will enable you to fit a board inside the top and bottom for a back board. If you know what finishing product(s) were used on your base cabinets, use the same. You could also take a picture of your current base cabinets with you -- or better yet, a drawer -- and you may even be able to end up with boards with a finish to match your base cabinets.

If you build your own box shelving, by adding a divider and a square door on the end using the same hinges and door knobs, your shelves could better match your base cabinets, too.

However you decide to do shelving, suggest painting the wall above the cabinet the same tone as the cabinet. It will make more of an impression than simple hanging shelves on the white wall.
