Although French Country does often have valances, the colors in yours are a bit strong.

You can still have a French country look with a leather sofa, see photo below for inspiration. I would add a collection of botanical prints behind sofa, and add some linen or burlap pillows. Your coffee table looks to stark white and it should be warmer like your dr chairs, and also distressed a bit. Style coffee table with a tray, some books and a plant. I would replace the little chest with a different end table as its too high for a lamp. Your floors are wonderful, and I think you should try this seating area without a rug.
I agree with valances being to bright, and also you should replace the pendants over island with some that coordinate with the dr chandelier.

Toile and french country go hand and hand :)
