Reason I'm asking is because we did the same thing with a drop in tub. I'll haave to ask how they sealed where the tile and the tub met. There was no lip on our tub either.

Ranmarie, please let me know. The sales person at a tub store told me I could tile the wall to where the tub and wall meet. She said her father has been a general contractor for 30 years. But I read a lot of online forums and also my General Contractor all say it will leak without a tub surround (no space for that) or that upward curve (skirt?) on the edge of the tub. I know it definitely can be done but my concern is water leaking down the wall and damage. Please let me know what you find out. Thanks!

Ranmarie, was your tub wall almost flush with the wall? Or was there the tub, some additional flat horizontal space like a ledge which you could tile (I think called a surround), and then the wall?

The first photo is how I was told you need the surface area around the tub to tile. I don't have space for this. I was told this won't have leak problems.

The second tub is not my tub but it is the exact same set up. I was told the only reason this won't leak is because the tub has a small edge that goes an inch behind that tile and prevents water from leaking down. The only 48x48 tubs sold today do not have that little edge going up. So tiling the wall direct to the tub could leak.

Could you just glaze your current tub and reuse it. It's pretty spectacular.

Why not do a shower only? 4x4 is a good size for a shower.

Yeah, if there's a tub somewhere else in the house, i think I'd just ditch it here. Either that, or make your peace with the cinderella -- it does allow for a full-length tub, which is impossible otherwise. You're honestly not going to want to take a bath in a 48" tub if you manage to track one down.

There are circular soaking tubs that would fit in the space -- acrylic versions of this:

Maybe we'll have ideas for a different way to rearrange things once you post your floorplan. But the only time I've seen one of those cindarellas in use, it was about the only solution for the tiny space. (I put in a standing shower and then added another bathroom with a tub on a different floor.)

Lila, I've heard about chipping and pealing with glazing. Also my mom has been in Real Estate 30 years and she thinks the shape is outdated and will look odd in an updated bathroom. You don't need a unusable tub for "resale". Better to have a nice shower than something that peels and chips or is too tall to shower in. Without a great deal of expense to expand the bath, you are down to either leave it alone, or do a shower.

I agree. I think I'm out of options. I thought I could find a custom tub but no luck so far.

I found out the piece on the tub that I was calling "skirt" or "lip" is really called tile flange.

Sorry, I somehow missed your earlier questions. I know the tub was flush with the wall and that it was a drop in. My husband built a wall that we tiled up the front with mosiacs. I'm just trying to find a photo. I will ask exactly how it was done and get back to you. We found if someone says "it can't be done" it's quite often because they haven't thought of the idea yet!

ranmarie, I agree. I talked to my contractor again. He did say having the tile wall meet the tub wall flush can be done but no way to seal and prevent leaks. I found out it is the tile flange that prevents leaks and drop in tubs don't have tile flange.

After a casual search I found many "4' alcove tub". Yes, four feet long with three sides having tile flange. Personally, I would skip the tub and just have a really nice 4x4 shower.

Terri, there's definitely people who love them. From what I read they are very heavy. So best bet at selling would be someone local that really wants it. I searched eBay and saw one green set with tub, sink, toilet posted that didn't sell.

It took four men to carry out my normal sized bathtub, so I cannot imagine how heavy this one must be. Just yesterday I saw a post from someone who wants to redo her entire bathroom to make it pink. Terri, thanks. I actually have two pink bathrooms! My master bath has, pink toilet, pink bidet, pink tile, pink sinks AND swan head fixtures. I'm going to try to work with the pink there. But this tub is in the hall bath used by my boys so pink just won't work.

The pink bathroom lovers would go crazy over all of that. I wish I had a pink bathroom, but my husband is glad we don't. Our house was built before that was popular. My son has a 1955 house with an 80s add-on master bedroom with bathroom, but he has green and white in the original bathroom. The bathroom added on has harvest gold tub, sink, and toilet. That is probably my least favorite color but he loves it. LOL

There is a company, MTI Baths, that will custom make a tub in acrylic. Also, you can add on a tile flange. Its not the most ideal way, but its been done. And finally, you could do a freestanding tub - but you would need to use a circular shower curtain rod - likely suspended from the ceiling. Check out www.barclayproducts.com to see the options

Infusion Kitchen & Bath, Thank you for the options! I didn't think I could do free standing because of the water splashing out and also I wanted glass doors not shower curtain. But at this point I may need to reconsider shower curtain.

Infusion K & B, I just called MTI. They don't make custom size (just custom add one) and they don't have 4 ft x 4 ft but they do have a 3.5 ft x 3.5 ft so that would give me space to build a platform and do drop in or undermount . It's a tiny tub but it will fit my tiny space. :)

Lee A. I asked. It is just very well caulked where the tile meets the tub. You will be able to tell when the caulking isn't holding anymore.

A 3.5 x 3.5 tub is not going to add to the resale value. In fact, I'd guess it would hurt it. A 4 x 4 shower would be better that a 3.5 x 3.5 tub.

You can't put a freestanding tub in that amount of space. Infusion Kitchen & Bath didn't take into account the 48" dimensions. While there may be a very short freestanding tub, once you allow for the slant of the sidewalls and ends, there will be very, very little room to stand (those tubs already have narrow bottoms). You'd probably have less than 18 x 24 to stand in. Nasty. And it would probably hurt resale.

Though tatts is correct - it would be small, a freestanding tub can be done. If you search "Pelion freestanding 47" tub" this is something like I was thinking about. The bottom is 31 x 17.5" so its actually not terrible. Its a more modern design so you dont have to deal with the slants and its more like a soaking tub.

As I said before its not really the right way, but it could work.

On the MTI custom tubs - I know they have made some extra large ones for sports stars. My mistake for thinking they would make an extra small one custom as well? I actually have a meeting with their rep today. I am curious now 8-)

I also agree with Tatts in that I am not certain a tub would help with resale value. The trend today is to put a big shower in and forego the tub - unless you're in a home that can afford the room of a big soaking tub and spa type bathroom. If this is the only tub in the home I think it needs to be kept because it could be a deterrent from making a sale to someone who might have small children. If it's not the only tub - it wont hurt to not have it.

We just removed a blue one identical to your tub last week. I am in the same boat you are. I LOVED that tub and the space I had. I have been unable to find anything 4ft x 4ft. I thought about a shower but, with resale everyone wants tubs. I think a shower would look nice but with two small children it is not ideal. Feeling your pain!

Wow, some peoples trash is anothers treasure, here I was looking for a Cinderella Tub, and came across this article, well actually I want a whole matching suite, sink toilet etc. pink, green, blue, anything but white. I just love them and I think they will be back in full fashion soon, maybe Kohler will reissue..in my dreams. Reglazing is gross, my mom just had a newer iron kohler tub done and it peeled within a month. The texture of glaze and acrylic is substandard in my eyes compared to cast iron, I replaced a tub with an Americast , the feel is ok, but the sound is horrible.

Wow, I like the shower door! Mine was navy blue, but spraying it white didn't work. We finally decided to give in and go with Bath Fitters. It's going to be done in a few weeks.

11 years later, I am still sick over the fact that my husband tore out my 1948 cinderella tub and redid the floor plan in our master bath. He put in the largest Tea for Two and I HATE it - takes forever to fill and wastes water and not comfortable unless you are a giant. And for the person who stated that "you wouldn't want to take a bath in a 48" tub" you clearly don't get the genius of the space saving design. The tub is on an angle so the bathing length is actually 4-1/2 feet long and I can say was the most comfortable tub I have ever used and I had my cinderella tub for 28 years. I am planning to find another tub like it and, when I do, I am going to tear out what my husband did and put it all back like it was. I live in Los Angeles so hoping to find one locally - I need the drain to be on the right and prefer white in case anyone might know of one.

We too have this cinderella tub. i just had ours reglazed and so far so good!! its guaranteed for 10 years. ItsIt’s still in the works so excuse the mud on the the walls!!

Looks good. I hope it lasts. We tried a spray on process which was guaranteed for 5 years. After about 1.5 years, there was massive chipping and when we tried to get it done again, the contractor b*tched and moaned that we were the cause. Cripes, it's a shower, how were we supposed to use it? So after he did it again, it still only lasted another year or so. At that point we decided to go with Bath Fitter. It's not original, but it fits fine and works for us.

Is it the cinderella tub as well?? i coukd not find anyone to cover this in my area which is why we did the glaze.

Cinderella, garden, I've heard it called both. The only place we were able to find to cover it was Bath Fitter (see my previous comments from a few years ago). We've been happy with it.
