lawn has roots 3 inches down ... presumably the roots of these plants are much deeper ... an actively growing lawn is irrelevant to whether the trees are actively growing ...

based on the pic you provided.. i would theorize ... its all handling damage ... big dudes grabbing branches and hoiking plants around.. in the shipping process ...

That's probably from handling and the damage is just now showing up.

I helped a friend plant 28 last Saturday. They were 8 feet tall and real hard to get out of the pots. They were very heavy and jammed into the pots. I'm sure they will show some damage in the future. No big deal, it's just cosmetic.

Costco was selling them for $20 a piece. Multiple tops, of course.

First you need to figure out what is happening. Notice at the table linked to that it talks about looking for fungal bodies on affected branches, using those as confirmation that a fungus is involved.

Hogan, do you happen to have a jewelers loupe or hand magnifier? One of these serves great duty when trying to diagnose fungal pathogens via their tiny fruiting bodies.
