My answer should be at least clear as your picture. Look's like thin laminate peeled off and the dark line is caused by "end grain" absorbing more stain than face grain. Conditioner might help but it will never look good as new usless done by a pro.

Sorry if the picture is poor. A local cabinet maker made them. I think they were stained and then had a spray finish on them. I think the damage is due to water splashes that settled at the bottom edge and caused the finish to flake off.

Appearantly nothing if the pro was your local cabinet maker. Building new parts and/or relaminating are two things that come to mind.
