It would be worth it to me to open that up and see the drain standpipe and make sure it is done correct. It would be nice to modify the drain so that it is recessed instead of sticking out.

If you have not done this before there will be some learning curves, and also if you haven't done drywall work or mud finishing that will be a learning curve also. Still doable, just don't expect to get it done in a day. Expect to go to the store multiple times as you figure it out.
