Backsplash and Range Knob Help.

Sorry in advance for the long post.

Almost done with a kitchen reno and having a huge problem deciding on backsplash and range knobs. Kitchen is asbout 263 sq ft. Not big, but larger than it looks in the pic.

Went for very clean look but think maybe I overdid it. It now lacks any character.

Cabinets (no wall cabinets) are a high gloss white, countertops will be Cambria Brittainica. This isn't my primary residence so I don't need the wall cabinets.

My island is 7'x4' (with 12" overhang on all sides) in maple with a greige stain called appaloosa with a Cambria Ella countertop.

Floors are porcelain wood planks in a color called Salvage Musk.

Appliances are all stainless steel. My range is a Blue Star Platinum (only thing I splurged on) and I initially went with the default steel knobs it comes with. But I want to change them out for colored knobs as the kitchen is really going to be boring without any color. just not sure what color. Any thoughts?

The only thing that stands out right now is the chandelier I went with as opposed to pendants. Very modern, but I absolutely love it. It's going over the island (49.5" long.)

Now for the backsplash. I'm worried something with too much pattern will look terrible with the floors, but subway tiles are very boring to me. Any ideas? I'm completely stumped.

    Hi Ellen-

It's going be to done by the end of April. The templates for the countertops were done Monday, and I'm going this Saturday to approve the layout.
The range hood was completely installed last week (i just don't have updated pics.)
The island is in, my contractor is installing it this week.
I need to decide on backsplash fast..lol..
But thank you for your comment. I wish I could see the character..

I think the knob colors for the splash of color will depend on what your accents are. Do you have a kitchen aid mixer that will sit on the counter? What color is that? Toaster? Blender? Anything with color? My bluestar is navy and so are my knobs. But so are my kitchen walls. I love your kitchen so far. If you have no accents in colors, my choice would be red. POP! And I'd add some red on the counter and in artwork or accents on the walls.

Do you have specific colors you lean towards? In that space any color would do, but I would definitely put in a color since you have so much white and wood. A color will really work well there. (disclaimer, I love color!) Check out Fireclay tiles and Heath ceramics tiles. They come in beautiful colors and have gorgeous pattern options too. Or you could do back painted glass for your backsplash. Your kitchen looks lovely btw! I can't wait to see it when it's finished!

I agree with Ellen. Your kitchen isn't even finished. I love your finishes so far, esp. the island wood with the white cabinets.

Do you really have to pick a backsplash tile right now? You may be thinking you need color (and maybe you do) but an entire backsplash with big color is something you'll be stuck with. I have a white kitchen and initially I was bothered by it's lack of oomph. At first I added red accents and I settled down. Eventually I changed most of them out for yellow. If you pick an accent color now for your backsplash, you'd better not tire of it.

The Cambria Brittanica and Ella look similar to me, curious as to why you are using both?

How about using the Cambria on the backsplash as well -- short splash to the windows on the sink wall, and bring it up to the hood on the range wall. On the range wall you could go all the way across at hood height, bring it up only at the range, or even include some kind of different detail.

I would stick with stainless or black knobs and look at easier ways to add color to the kitchen that don't require such an investment.

Looks great thus far. Good luck!

@Debbi Branka I have no accents at all yet. Haven't purchased anything for the kitchen.
Most of the those items will be out of view though. I think the only thing on the counter tops will be a few bowls and maybe a dutch oven. That's it.
I like the idea of doing red, or even orange with some green. Thank you.

@kiko oohh, those are interesting. I live 15 minutes away from Porcelanosa and didn't think to check them out, thanks.

@malabacat I'm leaning towards red, or orange and green. I think the orange/green with white would warm it up. But I'm not sold on anything just yet. About to check out Fireclay and Heath ceramic tiles. Thank you.

@Linelle Thank you. I guess I don't need to pick it right now. I just want it finished already. It's a major house reno that's been going on for a year now. I was considering just sticking a piece of tempered glass behind the range until I decide. Only thing is, I know myself- if I do that, I'll never get around to picking out the backsplash..

@Oaktown Brittanicca (hate that extra "c") and Ella are very similar. Reason I picked both is because the whiteness and pattern of Brittanicca looked very good with the white and high gloss of the cabinets.

The Ella is more grey and just looked dingy in comparison.
BUT, Ella looked gorgeous with the the soft grey of the island. Much more so than Brittanicca.

What's interesting is, since there's something like 36" between the island and closest cabinet, you can't even tell they're different colors since you don't focus on both at the same time. Surprisingly, they worked extremely well together.

I considered doing the brittanica as a backsplash but there's not going to be enough left from the second slab to do it. The other Brit. slabs are from different lots and I didn't like the pattern.

I do like black knobs and originally wanted to get them. I'm still considering black and have a feeling I may go in that direction after everything else is done.

Thanks for the pics, I really love the shelving in the second one- something I've been thinking about. Decided I'm gonna do it.
