Marble 2x4 tile over a painted brick fire place?

I have sanded using course grit sand paper and I can't get the paint to come off the glossy painted brick fireplace. I'm preparing to tile over the brick with 2x4 marble tiles. What do I do to prepare the surface that doesn't require attaching rib path or cement board? I used a deglazed as well, but still unsure if thin set will adhere. What's he best advice here?

Sophie Wheeler how do you demolish a painted brick fireplace? Isnt that a bit extreme to put tile over the painted fireplace?

Just trowel on the thinset so it fills the voids you should be okay

Thanks gals for the feedback. I saw the article on this old house it was great....but still want to make sure that I'm nit over looking something.

The question was how to tile over PAINTED brick! The "This Old House" article doesn't answer that question! The solution has to address getting something to adhere to the brick and not the paint on top of it.

I would use mastic, not thin set...that stuff sticks to anything!

Mastic stains marble and is damaged by heat. It is rarely ever the right choice. Demolition is required first if the project is to be done correctly.

Why not rough up the brick with a diamond grinder in order to get to raw brick surface. Of course one should practice proper protocol with regard to dust handling and potential lead content in the paint.
