One unit or separate?

If separate, how are they connected to the TV/monitor?

Are you asking how these are sold or which version is the best?

Most of them sold today are combo units. You can still get a separate DVD or BluRay player. I am not sure you can still get a VCR by itself.

The combo units usually have a single set of audio/video outputs, and the internal circuitry detects which one you are using and directs the signal to the output jacks.

The outputs are L/R audio (red/white) plus a video jack (yellow). Some have the separate video color jacks also. Just hook them up to a set of Audio/Video Inputs on your TV.
