I think the cabinets are a nice cherry but they used altogether the wrong backsplash. I would change that before I considered painting / refacing cabinets. You have warm cherry wood, warm floor tones and they used a busy and jaggedy splash. You can have a contemporary look with out the blue green grays making the cabinet tone look orange. Try that first - something like a warm gray in a glass subway. Consider taking the tile all the way to the bottom of the feature window or adding an open shelf in that space and tiling to the bottom of the dark painted shelf.

Your kitchen is timeless and elegant and it looks like it works well.

I will second the idea that to change the look, perhaps you should look to changing the backsplash.

My best suggestion is to not touch it for at least 6 months.

The cabinetry itself is not dated. However, the countertop and backsplash do not go with it. If you are keeping the counter and backsplash, look for inspiration for your cabinet color there - perhaps pulling out the lighter color for white cabinets or gray if you prefer. Another thought is white on top, gray on the lowers. You might want to go with just one color for cabinets if you keep the backsplash to avoid looking too busy.

Pick your wall color last. The floor is a neutral, natural color and can go with just about anything, so it does not need to be changed. If you get done with the cabinets and don't like the color of the floor you can have it refinished if it is solid hardwood, but it can get a little costly, so be sure it is in the budget.

If this was my kitchen, I agree with above and would keep the cabinets and change the backsplash.

Gorgeous cabinets! I would also change the back splash before doing anything else. The back splash is all wrong and since my eyes were drawn to it as soon as I saw your photo, it takes away the beauty of the cabinets. BTW--I love your black counter tops!
