It's called a grab, a youngster of a beetle. Many people will jump in a say it's a Japanese beetle. that may be true but will depend upon several thing, among them these:

1. Where you live.

2. The size of the grub.

3. The number of hairs on its butt and their arrangement.

i put the on the driveway.. and very soon a bird takes care of them ... they are one of the resaons you see the birds picking in the ground ....

they live underground.. they eats roots and stuff ...

one or two per square foot is nothing.. natures way ... its an irrelevant population ...

the most famous problem with such ... is destroying a lawn in giant patches.. when the population gets totally out of control [a dozen or more per foot] ... and there is a whole industry to control that problem ...

thought they may look like aliens from another planet.. and thoroughly disgust you ... a vast majority of the time... they are not a big problem ... if you can get past how ugly they are .. lol ...

It is a grub, the larva of one of the members of the Scarab Beetle family. These include the May, June, Japanese, Dung, and some 30,000 other beetles. Once the sacred beetle of ancient Egypt.

Some of these can be major problems in a garden, As larva the damage they do is dependent on population size as well as which beetle they may be. Generally less than 5 per square foot is not much of a problem while 10 per square foot will be.

Many people find these in the spring and then want to know what to do to control them and spring is not the time of year to do that. Late July to early August, just as these buggers are hatching from the eggs, is the appropriate time to take control measures. when they are most susceptible to the poisons or other controls used.
