Problem with redbud blooming

I planted a redbud tree at the end of last summer. It is only forming buds and blooming in the middle of the tree, towards where all the branches meet. To add a little bit of history, I had a crepe myrtle planted in the same spot for 4 years prior, but it had never bloomed and the last year it just completely died out of nowhere. I don't know if maybe something could be wrong with the dirt where the tree is planted? Or am I being impatient and the tree will eventually fully bloom? There are no buds on the second end of all the branches.
