Appliance help

Getting ready to update the kitchen. Looking for appliance advice. Dishwasher, fridge, range, microwave. Range with 2 ovens is preferred. Relatively high end but not crazy expensive (Bosch?) Anything you recommend or do not recommend is appreciated.

Tanya, I don't want you to go unanswered, but have no specific recommendations for you. You need to learn a lot more about what's available and what you need and how you like to cook before we can answer you. I wouldn't call Bosch "relatively high end", but rather "mid-range". That's a matter of perspective, however. If you've looked at Bosch and find it the right price range per looks and features for you, that's a start. You might also want to look at Electorlux, KitchenAid, and some others. To learn more about what's out there, visit appliance dealers, and look on websites like AJMadison and Universal. When you see an appliance you might be interested in on the 'net, look at the User's Guide/Manual to see all the details. Look for tabs on the listings that show you specifications, "downloads" (usually the manual and installation guide are there), etc. Go directly to the maker's website for more information as well as an materials that aren't on the store's site.

It's important to keep in mind that no single company makes the best of all appliances, and even more, no single company can fit one person's particular needs. It's rare that a different handle style or badge will look weird, though a lot of people obsess over that very concern. Builders usually have matched suites just because they get a great discount buying appliances by the truckload from a single maker. You can sometimes get a discount by buying all from one maker too, but often enough you can get an equivalent discount just from buying a whole kitchen's worth, though it might come in the form of a free dishwasher, or something, rather than a stated reduction. Depending on the store, you might have to go through your builder/contractor/designer to get the discount.

The most variable appliance is the oven, with gas cooktops a close second. In terms of cooling power, there's the least variation in refrigeration, but the configuration of the height, depth, shelves, features etc., can have an impact on how you live with the fridge, so it's important to find one that fits you. Dishwashers are the easiest to make blanket statements about, unless you have particularly hard or soft water, or unusual needs. Miele by far gets the most acclaim, and that goes for their middle range as well as top end models. OTOH, there aren't many which are hated (other than Viking).

So, what kind of range do you need? Gas? Dual fuel (gas top, electric oven)? Induction? Electric? What width? 30" with stacked ovens? 48"+ with side by side ovens?

How do you use your cooking surface? Mostly boiling water? Five or six small pots at a time? Wok? Canning? One big pot and a couple of small pots, but never more than four? Need low simmer? Need super high heat? How do you use your ovens? Mostly at 350° F? Pizza? Baking breads and cakes? Souffles? Moist environment? Dry environment?

What do you need in a fridge? Gallon holders in the door? (Caveat: Some people love this for the convenience, but the door is the warmest part of the fridge and not the best place for the milk.) Wide shelves? Deep shelves? Lots of room for produce? Lots of room for jars and containers? Freezer that holds food for many months? Ice maker? Through the door dispenser?

What do you need in a DW? Are your plates wide? Are your glasses tall? Does your flatware fit in the holder? Do you put large pots, cookie sheets and cutting boards in? Do you run it once a day? Twice? Once or twice a week? Do you have a lot of plastics? A lot of cereal bowls? A lot of yucky mess or are the dishes pretty clean going in?

When you're buying your own appliances you get to choose them to fit you, rather than fitting yourself around what you've been given. So what fits you?

Thank you. This is all good advice and I have never thought about all of these questions. A lot to think about.
