Both, but mainly getting rid of the small stuff.

For the bark you will need to remove the large stuff and the small stuff. The grit and turface are presized and only need to be sifted to remove the small stuff.

Maple, I found that when I sift Gran-i-Grit growers grit though 1/8 inch screen all of it goes through and so do not bother sifting it.

Pamela, I don't get rid of the fine stuff in the Gran-i-Grit. I use it without sifting. I do sift the Turface (1/8 " screen) and pine bark (1/4" screen) to get rid of the fine stuff.

You need to go smaller than 1/8". The window screen size is what you want.

If you don't get rid of the small particles, the gritty mix will not perform as it is supposed to.
