Heavy Feeders?

Last year, my squash and eggplant yields were very low. Not usually a problem. I read that some vegetables, including squash, eggplant, melons, broccoli, and cabbage are "heavy feeders." That led me to wonder if I hadn't provided enough fertilizer or the right fertilizer.

Last year, I moved my garden closer to the house, made several new beds. I was short on compost, still am. Had my soil tested a few months ago, the recommendation was a low nitrogen - like 5-10-10 or 5-10-5. What do "heavy feeders" and "medium feeders" require? How can you tell if you are meeting their needs?
