What size rug needed for this room>

We recently moved in and I am struggling with furniture placement for the family room and the size rug needed, 8 x 11?? Any suggestions - I tend to decorate more traditional. I know we need blinds or window treatments and of course I have nothing for the fireplace and I think the tv stand, etc...is too small for this room. I believe it is 16ft wide and over 20 ft long?

One trick is to use blue painters tape to lay out different rug sizes on the floor so you can actually see how large they are. Also, you generally want either all the feet of the furniture on the rug, all off the rug (less desirable), or all the front feet on.

Your room has a ton of potential with the beautiful floors, large windows, tall ceilings and fireplace. In regards to the furniture arrangement, I would try pulling the sofa away from the wall a little and putting the chair in the corner by the fireplace where the plant is to create a reading nook (with a small table and a floor lamp) and then using a smaller scale chair in that tight corner by the sofa. You could eventually purchase a wider media console with more storage.

It really depends on how you want your furniture arranged. Try arranging your furniture first and see what works. then decide on the rug size. You can have multiple seating area with this size room so try that first. for example, is the TV staying where it is now? or is it going on top of the mantle? Hope this helps.

Thank you for your advice. I was not sure of what size rug to use and this gives me a better idea. I do like the idea of a reading nook and felt that chair should be moved anyway...my problem is where to put this huge plant that I have had for more than 20+ years that started as something I could carry in one hand to barely fitting through the door this time :) I would like to put the tv on top of the mantle, but I am particular about wires showing and it is just not in our budget to make it how I would like it to look, unless someone knows something I don't on how to make the tv look like it was supposed to be there without spending a whole lot!! You have your furn on one side of this big room. Yes you need a 8x10 area rug with color. Paint walls a warm color buy samples put on wall and look at it before buying. I like to put panels on each side of window. But if you can go shutters in white that is always a good choice. Big mirror over firepl. Where is TV. You said stand too small is it a flat screen? Invest in a long low media cabinet. Something to hide wires and components . I like to fill empty space with potted plants like palm, silk is wat to go. Always put in tall planters use color. If you have wall space filed it and corners with plants.

I would say move everything away from the walls. The room is much too large to have everything anchored on the wall. I live in a tiny place in the city, so I have to do that, but I would say move things were you can walk around them and place the chairs where you can be sitting in the chairs and looking at the people on the sofa.

It could also be the perspective of the picture...making it look larger. I would still pull the seating from the wall. On of the chairs can look at the fireplace with the other one on the diagonal across from the sofa. That particular chair you wouldn't be able to look at the television. Then you could bring things in a little bit and use a smaller rug or a gigantic rug...depending on the look.

Push out into room a little away from big window. Put table where floor lamp is move floor to other end. Put both chairs on same side where railing is.move towards center of room about 2 feet put table between and with a plant. See my other comment re TV center you could put your large plant next to TV. Put in pretty pot with color. You need color. Make 8x10 area rug that. Also invest in large square coffee table, in front of sofa. Panels on windows. They don't have to be wide just long enough, go to floor always.some color in throw pillows and a nice throw on sofa would add color.

It depends on how you group the furniture. If the rug is too small and the furniture is way off of it, it'll feel like a fire pit. But if the rug is too big, it'll hide those gorgeous floors. I suggest some sort of pattern on the rug, something that suits your style, but the furniture is a lot of dark solid, so a pattern would give it a nice break. Also, you can pick a paint color from the rug.

I think it would look nice to move the plant, move the tv closer to the window and then group the furniture at an angle so the tv/fireplace seem like one large focal point. What do you think?

Don't worry about accessorizing the fireplace until the last phase.

The plant is awesome, and I understand it's difficult to find a space for it with it being so large. One more thing I thought in regards to the rug...you could always have a custom size rug made to fit your space. It could be a natural sisal or wool or a synthetic...there are tons of options. Your local flooring store would be able to help with that.
