Paint or Hardiplank Siding?

Can't decide whether to invest in James Hardie Siding or replace rotten wood and paint. Back soffits and facia have rotted and need replacing while the front and sides are in good shape. Detached garage is all wood which has rotted on bottom of all wood panels and the garage smells very musty. Anything I store in the garage ends up getting mildew on it. There are so many color choices. My neighborhood mostly has earth tone colors and my 1981 house originally was painted a toast color. Someone suggested Sherwin Williams #6087 Trusty Tan for large areas accented around windows with SW6084 Modest White. I just replaced all my windows and know my house can have much better curb appeal with the right colors. Any suggestions?

Just went through same decision for the same reasons. We don't have the stone work so if we went with siding instead of repair and paint it was going to be expensive. We had James Hardy siding put on and painted the body of the house a medium mocha color and trimmed with a dark chocolate. Sounds boring but our house looks fabulous and we have no regrets. Now we don't have the worry of continued deterioration . We live in the Pacific Northwest so lots of moisture.

I like your current paint colors. I'd paint the door in a nice accent color.

The garage looks like it may have been a carport at one time. Wood that is part of the structure should never be in contact with the soil. It looks like your siding goes to the ground and even has a baseboard. There should be exposed foundation there. You need to figure all that out before you replace with anything. Hardiboard is nice.

Thank you! The garage has always been a detached garage with a breezeway to the back door. I need to get a plan to trench around the garage since the grass grows up to the garage and the lawn guy's weed eater will cause damage. I was thinking of a border of river rock?

@puremichigan I never thought of sage but I really like that idea. What paint company/numbers are those selections?

The vertical Hardie Siding would be a good choice, with some type of maintenance free eaves and facsia. I would fix that front entrance roof line, change out the door and insert a downlight in the eave over the door to highlight the entrance. Gray might be a good choise for the Hardie Siding.
