Suggestions For Adhering Brick Flats

What is the best mortar to use when adhering these brick flats to a painted wall? And should the wall be treated in any way (washed/sanded) prior to adhering? Thanks!

Type N or Type S mortar may be used... Please consult with a professional mason to achieve the best results possible when installing the brick. Depending on the space desired for the install, some preparation will need to be done such as removing the paint or applying metal lath to the substrate.
