Long clumsy living room

How to design this room??? It runs the length of our house and is where we do our "living." The alcove where the desk currently is used to be a porch so structurally we can't ditch the alcove (although I intend to ditch the half wall of drawers).

Goals:
1) increase usefulness (add seating, toy storage)
2) make it feel less like an ally

Budget is 30k tops.. Thanks all!

It's looking pretty good you don't have a long clumsy living room! You have a living room and office or reading nook, and an entry exit to the yard. This are three different spaces. And it is already defined for you I would add a light chair facing in toward the sofa and be done with that room it looks pretty good. I would add two armchairs to the area that looks like a built-in office and make it a space by adding a rug. Then I would set up the third area in the far back as a breakfast nook or a pass through area, its ok to have that!

oh I missed the 30k!

ok, knock out the built in, the pony wall the wall, add a header, make that space one big room. knocked out 8k right there. plus solving the floor issue, can you get more of that wood?

add a built in to the now back wall for tv and storage.

close the door way to the slider areas down a bit, yes I said make it a bit smaller.

add in recessed lighting and one center fixture.

replace furniture to fit new space.

I'm in love with your french doors with curved tops. I don't think I would get rid of the cabinets & pony wall as it gives you a real definition for the office space and I think you will not be happy with them gone. I do like your living area, however it seems as it is being used more as a playroom. What do you think?

Move the child's desk to the other side of that area so you aren't walking through a maze to get from one end to the other.

I wouldn't get rid of the pony "wall" as you certainly can use storage and it conceals the couch and end table. I'd add 2 area rugs, one where the desk is, the other closer to the sliding glass doors to define the 3 areas. You have a lovely space already!

Spend the major bucks on a couple of laminated beams so you can open up the entire space. Spend another chunk to unify the flooring where you take out walls/cabinets. Can't tell what is in the room with the armoire, but I'd replace it with a wall of built-in storage. You could add a TV there and that room might make a better living/TV room, but we can't really see it and don't know any measurements to be certain about our suggestions.

You have a line of interesting spaces with different purposes. Maybe all you need is a neutral color on all the walls, or maybe a slightly different tone of the same neutral color in different rooms to unify all the spaces. The addition of accents, art, accessories and fabric in a second color could connect them visually, too.
