How Long Would You Wait?

Our kitchen remodel was completed (minus punch list items) December 2014 - less than 1 1/2 yrs ago. We sprung to have 3 glass front cabinets lighted which was a considerable added expense. This February I noticed the lights would flicker occasionally - never when I tried to show DH... and a couple weeks later one cabinet just stopped lighting.

I posted on the electrical forum & was told to check the transformer (all 3 cabs light from one switch). DH replaced the transformer but that didn't remedy the problem. I told him before he went digging into the ceiling to just call the electrician who did the work to schedule an appt. to come fix it.

He called 6 wks ago and the guy said he'd get back to him. A follow up call DH made 2 wks ago has gone unanswered.

We've been out straight - DH w/ work travel and me with managing my Dad's recent surgeries & care. Yet it still bugs me every day when in the morning & evenings when those cabs are usually lit to see them dark. DH said this morning that he'll call once more & then just try to get another electrician to look at it.

That may be the wise thing to do, but it really ticks me off that we have to chase someone else down and be on the bottom of a job list for another electrician. It cost the amount of a kitchen appliance to light these cabs and the job is so recent I think our guy should stand behind it.

What would you do?

I've messed around waiting for a contractor before. I think you'll get action if you send him a certified letter informing him you'll be filing a complaint with the state CCB (Constuction Contractor Board.) it sounds extreme, but if you're being ignored there's not much leverage other than threatening his license.

Wow, I don't think I could do that.... I know that this must be just a nuisance call for him but I hate to think you have to go to those lengths to get someone in. And if I'm honest, I have to say I don't feel good having someone do work in my home who is there with bad feelings about us. Not because I think they'd deliberately do something wrong, but because it would feel so stressful and uncomfortable.

Ah! I missed the timeline. If the problems started greater than one year after work was complete you're likely on your own fixing this.

Contractors are ridiculously busy in my area. Too busy working on present, paying projects than to mess with stuff that was done nearly a year and a half ago.

You can't file a CCB complaint after one year anyway.

live_wire_oak, I replied above before seeing your post. I haven't looked through our paperwork to see if there is anything like that written in re trades' work. They were all hired through KD.

Mostly, we want him - or someone from his crew who installed - to come in because they are familiar with this job & the placement of all the wiring. I have no qualms about paying for a service call, it seems it would be more efficient to have them do it than another electrician.

Are you presently on the schedule/ in the queue for a service call? Perhaps there's a misunderstanding that you're not a paying customer, but that you're just getting fit in when they have extra time?

benjesbride, we don't know if we're on the schedule. When DH spoke with him he never said we expected free service. He explained the problem and told him that he (DH) had replaced both the switch & the transformer with no luck fixing it and asked if the electrician could schedule us in to give a look. Electrician said he'd get back to DH who gave him all our contact numbers.

All of the bulbs in the light strips were working when the intermittent blinking began, so I don't think it's the lights, but a bad connection.

Below is a portion of the electrician's cost breakdown that shows a $975 charge for lighting 3 upper cabinets. If someone had paid me to do this and it failed in a little over a year of light use, I think I would want to follow up with my customer. It just seems like the right thing to do.

Yikes, that seems like you paid a crazy high price for those LEDs. I would definitely keep bugging him.

Hire someone else and try to back charge him. He's not coming.

Back charging will never stand up in any court. What is the warranty period in your contract?
