Hmmmm, don't remember that, but my memory sucks. Seems like onions and sweet potatoes would compete for underground space. But the onions will be gone before long, and sweet potatoes need warm soil, so if you planted somewhat away from your onions, they could eventually take over the space. Maybe I was talking about a 2nd crop, to go in after early ones like onions. You know you can eat sweet potato tips. I have put them in stir fry. They are an Asian delicacy, I think.

I have grown sweet potatoes as a ground cover underneath pepper plants, roselle, lion's tail and something else that I no longer remember, but I know it wasn't root crops because, like Amy, I think the sweet potatoes would compete with other root crops.

I like Amy's suggestion that you plant them somewhat near the onion bed---maybe on its perimeter and let the plants vine into the onion area only after the onions have been harvested. Onions do not particularly like sharing space, so letting the vines run too rampantly into the onion area might result in you getting smaller onions that you otherwise would. I think onions would be particularly unhappy about sharing space with a root crop, whereas they might not mind sharing space with a non-root crop, depending on the spacing used.

That something else I couldn't remember last night was okra. I've grown sweet potatoes as a living mulch under okra plants.

Ooh. I like the okra idea! Those can get weedy. Okay. I'll plant some type of leafy green near the onions, then. Thanks ladies!!
