Hey all! Looking for some advice for a kitchen. We are about to close on a house which needs quite a bit of work. So we are trying to work around what we have to minimize investments into remodeling.

We feel that the kitchen isn't completely hopeless, but it's a bit too dark and too brown... and we wanted to bring a bit of a modern feel to it.

We are thinking about doing the things shown on one of the pics below (marked up with red/blue colors) and then perhaps adding those stainless steel bar pulls to the cabinets (we love those, but not 100% sure it would look good). Any ideas what could lighten it up without major rework? Would it be worth to repaint the cabinets in white? Do something with the backsplash maybe?

Those cabinets look like they are well-made from high-quality wood and in good shape. I wouldn't paint them. I would paint the wall a creamier color. That dead white isn't a good match.

Flattening the ceiling and more lights would help. I'd put in a big, bright, easy-clean rug.

I couldn't live with that floor. As for all your other changes, they are fine but not really needed. I don't like the white walls either.

I think the ss pulls would look nice. A nice glass backsplash with some color would modernize it, I think. The countertop looks like Blue Pearl Granite, is that correct? You could bring in some blues with a glass backsplash to tie in the subtle blue of the blue pearl, add some pulls, paint the walls and it will look really nice.

Paint the cabinets a light creamy colour and add some nice hardware. It'll give it new life. That honey oak colour is really dated. Add subway tikes to finish off the look. They're pretty inexpensive.

The floor would be the first thing I would get rid of as for thr rest this is one of those jobs where a few hours spent with a kitchen designer can pay off huge this could be quite a nice space . A counter depth fridge would be a must this is one of those spaces that I love to do there is great potential to have an amazing kitchen But really think about redoing all the floors

I think changing the floor, adding some backsplash and a different color paint and some modern pulls caould make a heap of difference. dont know if removing the wall is neccesary

Thanks for all the comments, just read them and you all really helped me settle on the decision to rip up the floors. I've been thinking hard what I like the least about the house and that tile ended up a #1 on the list. So I guess it's going away. I'd hate to do all the things around the house and still have the biggest thing in there.
