kitchen cabinet paint

I have gotten quotes to have someone paint my kitchen cabinets -the ones who are using something called PPG Breakthrough paint want $2500. A few painters who are using Ben Moore or SW paint is more reasonable -around $1000. So tempting to go with a cheaper person but I am wondering if the higher quoters will do that much better of a job...all have references and pics on FB, websites, and they all look comparable. What should I do? Does anyone have any advice/experience with cabinet painters and is it worth paying so much more?

How is the PPG different from the others?

I don't have experience with cabinet painting, but wonder if you should check just which BM or SW products the quotes include. Cabinet Coat by BM has been mentioned here often as a very excellent paint, and if they are using that, I would go with the lower cost. Not sure what SW paint would be the best. Just be sure that you get it (and a guarantee) in writing!

I would try to find out whether there's a difference in the price of the paint. If the paint is indeed superior to BM or SW, I'd ask if you can buy the paint and have some of the other painters use it.

That's a good idea nosoccermom. I am not sure what is so special about PPG but that paint is what 3 painters have said they use and their quote are about $1000 more for the job. The lower quotes said they would be using BM or SW paint but not sure which line, I will have to find out. I just can't believe there would be such a huge price difference.

After reading the comments on the Painter's Forum (nosoccermom's link), it sounds like you need to have some experience & expertise with this particular paint, as it dries fast.

I agree. I paint a lot of furniture with chalk paint so I kind of know my way around a paint brush but I wouldn't attempt to use that on my own! I will leave that to the experts!

Be wary of anyone who will quote you $1000 to paint kitchen cabinets.

I have a small kitchen, 10x10. Four years ago I had my cabinets painted (original boxes and new doors, drawer fronts, end panels, crown molding). I paid $4200. I live in the SF Bay Area. They did a beautiful job. The only show of wear at all is where my door-opening cat has sunk his claws into lower door top edges.

$1000 sounds too cheap to me. Remember, its not just the paint itself, its the quality of the work too. The preparation is as important as the paint. The cleaning, sanding, sanding between coats, etc. The painting itself is the easier part, preparing the surface for paint is what takes the time, IMO

I'm with Linelle. I have a total of 32 cabinet and door fronts. I would say it's a medium sized kitchen with an island. I'm paying $6800 - and I'm in the Chicago area.

They are removing my door/cabinet fronts and taking them back to their shop to paint. Then they will come onsite and paint the boxes. They estimate that the onsite work will take a week to do. So - this is not a quick job where they are just slapping on some paint.

Iam702 is correct. You need to ask what their process is. What kind of paint they use.

You will not be getting a quality job at that price. Average rates would be 4-7K. There is a lot of prep to do this correctly if you want it to last. Also, the quality materials to do this would approach 1K. You need someone who can spray a catalyzed varnish in a clean room. But only after degreasing and using the proper sealer.
