It seems like this is a main entry for you. With a FP there it leans towards more of a formal entry, but I think with some clever storage it can look quite nice. Shoe storage can be a real issue, especially with a family. I noticed this idea, and although it's very modern in style I think the concept is good. Imagine racks like this fitted in a repurposed cabinet that's more of the period of your home. It could be put under the sconce at the far end with a tray on top for dropping mail, keys etc.

You could put a small bench that fits under windowsill to the left of FP, and some shoes could be stored under there also.
I like the look of a chair by FP though, so consider replacing the leather one. If your replacing rug I would do that first, then use a colour from rug to inspire wall colour.

Love the paint color suggestions! I think we need a chair in the room, but the leather one is too dark and bulky.
