I am renovating an old house to contemporary and want to make the wood burning fp into a gas log fp. My builder says I have to have tile on the floor in front of the fireplace like this style...your's doesn't have tile ....it goes down to the floor....how can I make my fp like this...smooth wall to the floor with the fp insert? Thanks for your question. If you purchase a Direct Vent gas fireplace, versus, an Insert gas fireplace, you can finish the front as per this photo.

Perhaps you already have an Insert (type) gas fireplace and this is why your builder is telling you that a hearth (on the floor for at least 18" - in Ontario, Canada) is required by Code.

The only way to get around this is to purchase a Direct Vent gas unit, I believe. Contact your local gas fireplace supplier and they will help you figure out 'the mechanics' - as this really is not a Design issue, it is more of a Fire Code/Building Code issue.

You might also contact valor fireplaces (.com) if you want this particular unit. It is their L1 model.

Is this actually limestone or travertine or a porcelain tile. When i google it, comes up as a porcelein tile. I love it and need to order asap. Where did you purchase from? thx.

These are 12 x 24 Mare Bianco Travertine from Stone Tile International, Toronto. Remember that tile styles do come and go - so if you love the look, some designers select a slab from the quarry and have the individual tiles cut, for a 'smaller tile useage' such as a fireplace wall. Hope this helps.
