Japanese Maple in zone 5

I adore Japanese maples. I have a dwarf lace leaf in the front that's thriving, but in another location I've lost three Bloodgoods. Help! What am I doing wrong? I want a Bloodgood somewhere in my yard. Several of the neighbors have had theirs for years!

Have a look around your neighbours' tree for seedlings. If they are willing, a local seedling is your best bet for success since you know the parent likes it there. Then, plant it in a protected spot. You want low wind all the time and no salt & plenty of snow cover in winter. Also make sure you don't plant it under the eaves where it won't get any water.
