Your wall color will depend on adjoining rooms that are visible from the kitchen. This would give you the option of a monochromatic or contrasting color. I would also consider getting a quote from an expert faux painter to change the cabinet color. It is amazing what can be done with faux painting. Another consideration is a back-splash, there are several low cost options. Remember, if you don't like a color, you can always change it, the best part of painting. Good luck and have fun with it!

I would paint the cabinets white to go with the door and your new SS appliances. Find pictures to inspire you:)

you seem to love color, so why not stay bold with an up to date color. You could go into the warmer grays to gray browns or gray greens. These would work with the cabinets. you could go really bold with a new red which looks great with stainless and your cabinets. It all depends on what you want your kitchen to say.

The right green backdrop can play like a neutral - I'd be inclined to consider something tamer and warmer grellow http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/sesame but what color are your big upholstered elements? table and chairs?

I am repainting the kitchen walls and will be adding backsplash (subway tiles) later....please look at these pictures and see if you like the gray-green color .....this is a work in progress but the gray green looks better than the beige did! LOL

I think for now, I'd paint the cabinets white but look into replacing the upper cabinets doors from the "arch design" to the same design as the lower cabinets. New hardware if you want to update further. For the wall color, a pretty pewter gray (a color that complements the stove gas grid gray color).
White on white looks good. Then, when you transition to stainless steel appliances will work beautifully with your "new" white cabinets. You'll need to replace the pantry door as well to match the new upper cabinet doors. Here's a white on white kitchen. Professionally sprayed cabinets will last "forever".

Paint the walls cream white and add recessed spot lights.

Do not use white lamps. Use warm white lamps.
