Kitchen lighting, what should get their own switch?

I Currently have a 4 panel switch for my Kitchen.

*Island Lights (3 pendant lights)

*Recessed lights to light up kitchen

*Upstairs Hall

*Downstairs hall

I have a small 1600 sq ft tri level home. Our kitchen will be about a 10x10 with an island. I recently tore down a wall that divided the kitchen from the family room. Dining room is right next to kitchen but has a switch for the light somewhere else.

My question is, do the island lights get their own switch or should they come on with the kitchen lights?

I plan to add under cabinet lights, do they get their own switch or should they be added to the island light? Pending the island light lights stay on their own switch. My friend suggested having the under cabinet switch in the space between the cabinets and the counter the way the garbage disposal is.

I really would like to avoid having a 5 panel switch on one wall just because to me its not visually pleasing.
