I love the rustic barn look you describe for your cabinets. The butcher block will be a great addition. Perhaps you can paint the backsplash until you replace it.

Chalk paint in akitchen is a bad idea unless you want to accelerate the day that you rip them all out and replace them. If you are going to paint, at least take the time to do a quality job with quality materials.

Two colors can be great, even provide more visual order. But beware that some of those rustic paint finishes can end up looking like years of neglected grease and grime. Every time you come into the room, you may have the urge to scrub. Making such choices is always a little unnerving because of their sense of permanence. Good luck with the project.

I'm showing you this photo only because it's similar to what you're planning. Until you replace your backsplash, you could paint it a nice apple green, or white.
