Pictures?? difficult to say without seeing style, size etc

Can you add an extra light to the bottom or spotlights ? At the top of the stairs in there a window or could you add one. Could the 2 pannelled glazed door at the end (pic 2) be replaced with a 4 panelled glass door. Otherwise it's the usual light paint/mirrors etc. Victorian/Edwardian houses do have dark hallways.

we'd recommend a large wall mirror on the wall opposite your stairs. We would suggest perhaps an all glass mirror that will really help reflect the light or a neutral white framed mirror. Some examples below:

Hi Jane,

Judging from the photos and not knowing your budget I would replace the lamp with a multi directional one like the one below; it will bright up the room. You could also place mirrors in strategic places but I will need to see the hall to advise you better

If you can stretch your budget I would consider adding some LED light along the stairs and in other areas,

Hi Jane, we have had a lot of customers who have used light/white coloured laminate flooring to lighten darkened areas such as hallways, good options to use such as the Quietwalk Tignes, or Vintage Whitewashed or alternatively there are loads of White/light laminates options to choose from. We would happily send you samples if you wanted.

Alternatively you may like a more neutral tone such as a solid oak floor, still light but also very robust and will add a lot of warmth to the property not just in colour but as a good insulator too!

Change every possible door to a glazed one.
Add a big mirror, either with a lamp in front of it or opposite a glazed door to bounce some light around
Add either a track light or stick with one light and put in low energy daylight bulbs and leave them on, they really don't use much electricity and are amazing, light bringing the sun indoors (easily the cheapest and easiest solution at about £5 per bulb).

Can I ask why you want to lighten it up? How does it feel at the moment? What is it that you don't like about it (except the fact you feel it is too dark), Is the rest of your house nice and light? how are your other areas decorated? in what style? Just saying I want it to be lighter may not get you the results you are looking for. you have to ask yourself some questions for example, how do you want to feel in this space? Who uses it? Is it a conversational hub or just a thoroughfare? Lots of questions to ask. if you ask all these questions plus more you will definitely be more likely happy at the end of your colour change. We would definitely recommend trying a feature mirror along the wall opposite the staircase (the bigger the better!). It will help to open up the space and will reflect light sources giving the illusion of brightness. You could also try either a bar light or installing 3 pendant lights to bring more light into the space and make a design feature out of your beautiful high ceilings. We've also seen some customers add LED bar lighting along their skirting boards which is really cost effective and can add a nice modern feel to your lighting design.
