Painting over wood panelling/wainscoting.

Im wanting to paint over wood panelling. I have been getting conflicting advice. Some say high gloss paint, some say semi gloss. Its old pine panelling put up in a 1988 so who knows what kind of treatment it has had over the years.
Im not even sure what pre treatment to do before painting.
Any and all advice greatly appreciated!

It's a matter of preference after reading a couple of articles on painting paneling. Semi-gloss and gloss are the preferred sheens since they are easier to clean than matte paints.

Priming the pine is the critical step. We've painted paneling and used Kilz to seal the wood so the knots don't "bleed" . The gloss finish is a matter of personal preference. I like semi, I feel it is a little more understated.
