Please, help my Dahlias in pots ... :(

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and ... hope to find help for my Dahlias. :( ... please see attached pictures.

My Gf and I have planted on the beginning of April 2 Dahlias in pots, because unfortunately we do not have a garden.

Everything has gone well till a couple of weeks ago. Dahlias were growing really fast, I could not even believe how fast they were growing ... especially one of them. :)

A couple of weeks ago, the edges of the leafs have started to become black ... and slowly, some of the leafs have become completely black. :(

I have to be honest, none of us has never done gardening before ... we are reading online what to do and how to do things ... however I could not find a solution to this.

Any help would be really apreciated.

They would probably recover once they are outdoors. Your plants are lanky because they lack light, and probably got some fungus because of their thin foliage.

you do know that they are supposed to grow in full sun, outside? You could cut back half of the stems and they would regrow nice and sturdy with natural sunlight

I know that they should stay outside, but we do not have a garden ... :(

What do you mean by "you could cut back half of the stems" ??

Torchitti, would you be able to put the dahlias in larger pots and leave them on the porch? Dahlias are not inside plants, and should only be started inside. If you do get inside blooms, they will be skimpy and not even close to their full potential. If you can't put them outside, you might consider adopting them out to someone that can plant them in the ground.

Linaria is saying that you can cut the stem half way up, to encourage the plant to become more bushy instead of lanky. As new gardeners, this might seem counter-productive, but 'topping' is quite a common practice and is done by dahlia growers to help the plant branch out instead of just growing up.
