1900's home add on dilema

I am working with an early 1900's home and there has been an add on to the back of the house. One story but the boards thy used do not match the original house at all! I was trying to find a historically accurate way to separate the look of the add on and the house without making it look bad. I was thinking field stone and turning the boards vertical instead of horizontal like they are on the house. Ideas on building materials or advice?
