It depends on the dining table and how many it seats. Generally, you want 24" to back your chair out and not hit anything, and 36" as a walkway, minimum. Recommended is 48" to 54".

The island is about 5' x 6'. The room is about 17' x 17 1/2' if you measure from the right end of the desk area back.

I have 60" from my table to my island (not including chairs). We start drywall next wk, electrical tomorrow. I am panicked about it not being enough. if both chairs are pulled out I would think a minimum of 66" would be ideal since most would like the walkway to still be there. I guess if the chances of all being used is about 1 per yr then maybe its not an issue!
