Lily stems broken off below ground

last modified: 10 years ago

I am rearranging a bed. I had 3 oriental lilies at about 4
inches high. I carefully dug around them with a pitchfork, but still managed to
snap all the stems off well below ground. Sigh. The soil was very compacted due
to having had some concrete work done a foot away, before they emerged. It was
either that or the fact that all the stems were coming up at an angle, and therefore I did not calculate the bulb
position well.

In poking around afterward, I never even FOUND the actual
bulbs. Will they die? Or resprout next year? Much though I like lilies, I do have lots. I would
let it go, but….this area will all be low growing plants in the future. So if they will resprout, I need to find those
bulbs. Thanks.
