Decorating help

I am a very poor decorator. I like lots of styles and am too gun shy to buy anything for fear it will look a mess. Here is my front room. I bought the furniture before we moved in. The rug is a 5x8. It's too small. Thinking 8x10. I bought the garden stool today but now thinking it doesn't look right. I need help with coffee table and rug. The furniture seems so lost and not pulled together. I love the idea of a more natural sisal style rug to make it less formal but again not sure if that will look strange with the dark grey couch. Also, I don't want to spend a lot. I've been looking at world market and home goods and joss and main for some deals. Ideas please!!!

You are missing tables. A coffee table and end tables. I think the garden table is too small. Do you have any lamps? I like the shelves and I love the chairs.

You definitely want a larger rug to ground out the space. This will also allow for the rug to go under your existing chairs bringing the seating area more together. I'd add some pillows with texture to your space too. Love the grey sofa and think a jute herringbone or diamond patterned rug would look great in this space. Target and West Elm have a few options. That's so funny because that was what I was coveting. A just herringbone pattern. Like the one from WE - http://www.westelm.com/products/jute-chenille-herringbone-rug-natural-ivory-b944/ - you think that would look OK with the grey? I don't want to be matchy matchy but also don't want it to look like it's too clashy clashy! LOL

Hello,

Determine what your theme (room style) is and use this as a common denominator for developing your total design concept. It appears you have appointed a traditional style. A sisal rug will not best harmonize with the period style/fabric design of your chairs. I agree with you, the accent carpet is a bit small in creating a conversational area. Your colors appear to flow quite nicely and furniture pieces are in scale and harmony - wonderful job here :-). Consider introducing an additional accent in a solid color to break up the pattern repetition. Ikea offers a selection of furnishings at consumer friendly prices.

Hi Lila, it looks like a nice room. Just curious...what's on the other side of the sofa? I agree the garden stool and rug both look small. If you don't mind (and didn't ask), I think you could do something different on the wall above the sofa. The one shelf is too high giving a bit of a visual disconnect. I think some framed art hung there might work better...and hung no higher than the lower shelf.
