Great space! But what size is your table. Your rug should be large enough that when the chairs are pushed out you are still on the rug. It looks like you will need something larger than 5x8. Also, I think you will need to pull the table away from the wall as the head chair is inaccessible.

The problem is that if we get a rug any larger than 5x8, it will flow into the "hallway" leading to the kitchen.

I know you are set on a traditional rug, but, unless you want it to look like rug showroom, you should consider a single-color rug under your table. Pick the same hue of blue from your other rug maybe? Just a thought.

My first thought is to turn the table to be parallel with the longer appearing wall leading to living room, if the walls are the same, it will also be better because it will not extend into the walkway, also the larger rug will fit better, and you could actually use the chair that is now by the wall. A too small rug always looks awkward. Chairs should still be on the rug, at least somewhat, when you pull them out to sit. I would choose a rug that has a base color of a "lesser" color in your living room rug. I would choose a stripe or geometric, or at least a much larger pattern than the living room. It should not look similar.

The light fixture is great, but should be larger...at least a 5 or 7 light for that style. The size you have, I would put over an island sink maybe.

With the size of that table, you need an 8 x 10 rug. Anything smaller will be annoying, but worse, it will look skimpy.

Grover- thanks so much for the picture! I definitely see the need for a bigger chandelier. However, do you think adding another blue rug makes the room a little too "blue"...dark even? Should I go towards a lighter, maybe cream solid rug?

That's a great idea! I actually want to put a rug there to protect the wood. I honestly like the way it looks now, but we've learned that our wood is pretty sensitive. So the more protection, the better.

You have pads on all the chair legs? And, is that area of wall yellow, or is that just the photo?

Another idea:

Going with a different color rug such as the one in the LR in that style should work fine. I would also love to see some art on both walls in the dining room. Move the LR chair more onto the rug to make it look more unified.

Due to the tightness of the dining area I would not recommend an area rug. I would proceed with some artwork, or a tapestry that has warmth and color. The dining area looks very sterile, a rug will create a tripping issue. The chairs would benefit from new upholstery, perhaps something in a tapestry or richly colored solid (warm turquoise or sage...pull the color out of the adjacent area rug).

Definitely turn the table. Then decide if a rug is needed and if it can be in a size appropriate for under such a large table and chairs.

Once the table is turned, each chair should have 24" of space for pulling it out and sitting down (without falling off of a rug edge.) Ideally, there should be another 18" behind the pulled out chairs for someone to excuse themselves from the table without disturbing the other diners. In addition, the rug should not run into the walls or any furniture on the walls. So, I'm in agreement with those who say you don't need a rug and to pull the colors from the living room rug onto the walls with art.

Beverly, that Wayfair chandelier may well be too small. I'll admit I didn't check the diameter when I posted it, but it is just over 25".

Try turning the table the other direction. Also, pull it away from the wall.

Your table seems to be pushed into the corner. I would suggest that the table should be turned the other way. It may be that, either way, the light fixture will not be centered... a different problem. A table that size probably needs an 8x10 foot rug in order for your guests to comfortably sit or rise without pushing the chairs off the rug. The rug should run the same direction as the table. A solid rug in the blue of the living room rug would be the best choice.

What a beautiful room. It looks as though you are trying to center the table under the chandelier. How about a somewhat unorthodox placement and turn the table on an angle.This may look great or absolutely terrible depending on space which looks a little tight. If possible I would remove two chairs on the long sides of the table to give you a more spacious feel....unless you need them frequently. I agree that the chandelier may be a bit too small. The post with the large pic on the wall and new lighting makes it almost unnecessary to place a carpet under the table. But the floor is so beautiful...are you trying to protect it or just liking the look of carpet/rug under the table. The changes already uploaded are great. just realized this is a year old post....hope everything came out for you.

Don't need a rug, get protectors for the chairs. The floors is beautiful it's a shame to hide it.
